My Mindful Cooking

It is not the right approach to describe a method of cooking mindfulness. It is not a physical ritual. If it becomes a physical ritual, the mind will find a way to automate that process too and mindfulness will be out of the picture. Processes are the way to develop mindfulness but they can also become a habit that can block the need for mindfulness. You can develop your own process that is meaningful to your consciousness. The best way to learn cooking mindfulness is to give a picture of cooking Mindfulness in practice. So I will describe my process of cooking mindfulness that has helped me a lot. As in other cases, the described process of cooking mindfulness is my personal experience so I would like to describe it in the form of a story.

I decide what I have to cook. Then I take out the ingredients and place them together. I light the cooking gas with the gratitude that I have a cooking gas. I feel the warmth that is going to convert the ingredients into a wholesome meal. I understand that this meal is important to me and my family. It is going to bring health and fulfillment to my family.

I notice the smell of different herbs and spices
I hear the crackling sound of tempering
I notice the nice aroma rising food getting cooked

There are different things that can bring peace to the mind, like music, arts but it can be vice versa also. Peace can bring beauty to all things. The arts are meant to give us an experience of the peace and beauty that even a simple work like sweeping can bring us.

Cooking is an essential art which every human being should know. Cooking is a process that connects us to the basics of our lives. And therefore, cooking is one ideal process for practicing mindfulness.

This is a process that developed unconsciously as a part of being mindful during cooking. It might help or indicate a direction in which you can find your cooking mindfulness.

Initially, mindfulness helped me get over my fear of cooking. Many people who actually love cooking are already in the state of mindfulness. This is the reason such people cook when they want to relax. For me, reading a book or writing gets me to a state of deep relaxation. I am aware of what I am doing.

However, this cannot be termed as absolute mindfulness because I forget what is happening around me in this case. For example, I used to read books while waiting for milk to get boiled and almost every time, it will get spilled. So it is merely a case of increased concentration instead of mindfulness. If you also feel that you can read a book or watch a short video while cooking or waiting in a queue, then you are just trying to fill the vacant space instead of being mindful about it.

It is natural for us to be able to concentrate on the things that we like. But on a flip-side it causes us to dislike other things with equal intensity. Mindfulness brings the patience to look at a seemingly uninteresting or dull space for a long time. A shooter or a hunter will appreciate the value of this patience – to keep staring at grassland or forest area till the prey arrives

I feel this is level one. In the next level, we are able to look at our deep-lying fears and strong emotions. And get over them.

Cooking mindfulness is more than just being present. It must appear extremely dull to be just present. However, mindfulness is a state of Eureka or ultimate discovery every moment of our lives. The person who created the proverb “don’t cry over the spilled milk” was being mindful of the hidden treasure inside a simple incident. Newton had a moment of mindfulness when he saw the apple fall. Archimedes was mindfully aware of the water pushing his body upwards. and he ran naked, being excited by this discovery. It makes me wonder that we have so little awareness that even a moment of mindfulness can change our lives, as well as the lives of millions around us. All the major discoveries were actually not a product of laboratory experiments but of a few moments of mindful awareness. Therefore, mindfulness is far from being dull and boring. It is the gateway to the most exciting insights that can change our lives.

Cooking mindfulness

The ritual begins by offering gratitude towards the gifts of nature in the form of fruits, vegetables, grains etc. All our cooking ingredients are derived from mother nature’s bounty. This ritual just takes 2-3 sec to just feel the joy of abundance in your heart!

I prepare the ingredients (cutting, dicing, kneading etc.) with the awareness that these food items are going to be absorbed by our bodies and bring health and happiness to all the family members.

As I throw spices and other ingredients in the frying pan, I recite the words”Brahmaarpanam” (offered to the creator) or “Vishnuarpanam” (offered to the one who sustains). Fire is considered to be the messenger of the gods. I pray that all the ingredients are purified by this cooking process and made divine, to bring divine bliss to all the consumers of this food.

This is an ideal description. Sometimes, I still get lost in negative thoughts. However, now I am aware that I should not throw anything in the frying pan while thinking a negative thought, so I recite the above short verses and hope that food will be purified of my negative thoughts.

When you are too low, hearing positive music or even sermons might help.

The most important fact is that this entire process is mental and there are no material rituals aligned with it. Everything is in the mind. From outside, you might never find it any different from any other cooking style.

The immediate results of this process can be seen on the cook. He/she will feel satisfied and at peace, happy to achieve something divine in the simple process of cooking.

And the result of mindful cooking –

Smarter Solution than Vaccine!

Namaste,

I am Kanika and today let’s talk about what we can do before the vaccine for coronavirus arrives.

Let’s look at some of the past decades. We have seen so many serious disease outbreaks. And there has to be a way because vaccines always take a longer duration to develop.

How Vaccine Works?

The concept of vaccine has two aspects. The first aspect is vaccination; where we insert some kind of antigen inside the body. Now, this antigen can be special molecule from pathogens, dead pathogen or live attenuated form of pathogen. And second aspect is role of the body where it identifies the pathogen and develops an antibody for it.

So, you know, the vaccine is not exactly a cure for a disease. It is just an artificial method to trigger the immunity of the body and then the immunity, the immune system of the body makes the antibodies that are actually required to kill the virus or any pathogen, and because the fact is that we are not capable of making antibodies outside the body. We can only trigger the immunity.

But then there are so many people who are actually infected by this coronavirus, and yet they’re asymptomatic because their immune system was strong enough to handle the virus and keep it in check. And, you know, there is one very important question.

Can we all do it?

And if yes, then how?

Immunity is the reason why the slum children living by the side of gutter, survive and thrive; sometimes even better than kids living in very hygienic conditions, because they have a very strong immunity and even a common cold virus can kill an HIV person because he has low immunity.

So immunity is the key for survival against any disorder.

And corona virus has underlined the role of immunity. The elderly people esp. above 75 years of age have the highest death rate; as their natural immunity is lower as compared to children or youth. Besides people suffering from severe illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disorders have a significantly higher death rate compared to people with no co-morbidity.

It is always advised not to get vaccinated when you are sick or suffering from a fever Because when you are sick, your body is already fighting one battle. And vaccines will provide more toxins or more pathogens inside the body and the body will have to shift its focus from one battle to the other battle. Therefore, vaccines also work on the basis of immunity. If there is no immunity, even vaccines are useless!

According to Ayurveda, there can be a countless number of diseases, given the complexity of our metabolic system. And even with a modern perspective, there can be a countless number of mutations, pathogenic mutations in all kinds of microbes and therefore, in every few years, we will have a new virus, a new fatal virus!

Here, the vaccine has a little problem.

You cannot develop a vaccine for an unknown pathogen. And normally vaccines are developed only after a significant number of people are infected by a particular pathogen. However, it is a dangerous approach because in this manner, a vaccine will develop only after a pathogen has killed a certain number of people and therefore vaccination is a great solution, but it is regressive in nature.

It is always behind schedule!

And with more frequent outbreaks of pathogens, new forms of pathogens, we need a more aggressive solution along with vaccination.

Vaccination is an artificial support for developing immunity so that we can develop the technique to fight the real pathogen! but what if we are able to enhance the immunity so that we are ready for any unknown pathogen any time.

Here is another perspective.

Any pandemic epidemic is a vaccination drive by nature. And what if you are able to encounter the virus and your body is able to identify the virus and develop its antibody all at the same time in a very, very short duration? Then you will not fall sick!

And this is something which we can call a perfect state of immunity.

And what if your body can do that?

Is it not safer and more effective?

Because in that case, you would not have to wait for the vaccines!

And in this context, Ayurveda or any form of natural medicine has a very, very aggressive approach because it does not focus on the pathogen outside.  It focuses on the body.  It focuses on innate immunity, on enhancing the immunity and preserves the health of the healthy, irrespective of the external conditions.

And that’s why, whether it is coronavirus, Zika, Bird Flu, SARS or any new form of fatal pathogen,  your body will be able to encounter the pathogen; self-vaccinate itself instantly and you will not fall sick.

You might get the infection. The virus might get inside your body, but you will stay asymptomatic.

And we have already seen many such cases in case of coronavirus, there are people who are infected, but they’re not falling sick. If a person has great immunity, he will be able to develop resistance instantly without any vaccination. And this is the direction in which we should look at, because you don’t know when the coronavirus vaccine is going to actually be there.

And do you think that coronavirus is the last one?

They can be an endless chain of such mutated viruses every few years. and what if the drug-resistant pathogens attack??? We don’t even have proper medicines for them.

And therefore, the only Long-Term, Short-Term, and Real solution is to meet the body’s so strong that it would be able to fight off any and any pathogen.

Period!

Healing through the Magical Water

Photo by Valeria Ushakova on Pexels.com

Today, there is no guarantee that the food, medicine, or even water that you drink is healthy enough. But we see that children happily survive in slums, whereas some die with strange, inexplicable phenomena like sudden infant death syndrome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudden_infant_death_syndrome

Ayurveda and all ancient medical sciences believe that the mind plays a huge role in health. A balanced mind can maintain a perpetual state of perfect health. Similarly, the mind can change or improve the effectiveness of the food we eat or the water we drink.

In ancient India, rishis or sages used to keep just a camandal or a unique jug to carry water. It is believed that they had the power to infuse magical qualities in water and survive only on that.

Ancient Chinese monks practiced the art of bigu. Bigu is a state of complete abstinence from food and water. It is a state of perfect physical sustenance without any gross energy supplement from outside. Imagine a person who does not need to eat or drink anything! But they also achieved the final state of bigu through the use of some herbs and unique magical water. I believe that they prepared this magical water through the power of meditation. https://sites.google.com/site/delawareteasociety/yoked-to-earth-a-treatise-on-corpse-demons-and-bigu

I believe that magic water heals the higher layers of existence and therefore, its effect is immediate and magical. If done properly, it might cure the most impossible disorders immediately.

Daiv vyapashraya

Ayurveda has 3 branches of healing. The most effective and yet the least known is Daiv vyapashraya. The word Daiv means divinity and vyapashraya signifies “to take shelter in” or to apply. The magic water treatment is a past of Daiv vrapashraya chikitsa.

Ayurveda believes that the divine energy that runs our body can be directly contacted. And we can resolve our physical problems through ensuring an unhindered flow of this energy.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/327701620_SATVAVJAY_DAIVAVYAPASHRAY_CHIKITSA_BOON_TO_MANAS_VIKARA’S_Corresponding_Author

According to Charak Samhita, following methods are prescribed for Daiv vyapashraya.

  • 1. Mantra (Hymns)
  • 2. Aushadha (Amulets, Talisman)
  • 3. Mani (Wearing of gems)
  • 4. Mangala (Auspicious ceremony)
  • 5. Bali (Offering to god)
  • 6. Upahara (Gift)
  • 7. Homa(Oblations)
  • 8. Niyamana (Observance of scriptural rules)
  • 9. Prayascita (Atonement)
  • 10. Upavasa (Fasting)
  • 11. Svastyayana (Chanting of auspicious, Hymns)
  • 12. Pranipata (Observance to the god)
  • 13. Gamana (Going to pilgrimage)

The modern field of energy medicine is a part of this vast science. And it is growing very rapidly

Ancient civilizations like Inka, Mayans, Polynasian tribes extensively and effectively practiced mantra healing. We can still find mantra healers in African tribes. Shamanism practiced in native American Tribes is a form of Daiv vyapashraya.

Science Behind The Magic Water

And all this appears real instantly when we look at two mind-boggling scientific experiments –

Water Memory Experiment

This experiment slows that water exposed to different forms of music and environment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_memory. Besides, this experiment has been repeated many times by different people with consistent results! So water remembers what happens. Probably, the belief that rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, or Narmada are scared is not a myth after all. Testing of Ganga water done in 1856 by a British scientist led to surprising results – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3225782/

A list of other experiments on Ganga water can be found here – https://www.facebook.com/scientific.vedas/posts/323655977821455. The bottom line is that water can retain the effects of meditation, prayer, and environmental vibrations.

Moong Sprouts Experiment

In Moong sprouts experiments conducted by heartfulness meditation center, the moong seeds were sprouted in two different conditions – the researchers placed some soaked seed in the meditation room and others in a room with TV and wifi radiations. After a few days, the moong sprouts exposed to Bluetooth, Tv, and wifi turned yellow and died. Whereas, the moong sprouts grown in the meditation room multiplied rapidly and were lush green.

Find the details under heading stress and diseases in https://www.daaji.org/travels-and-conversations-with-daaji-14-january-2019/

You can also try this experiment at your own home and see the difference!

Double Slit Experiment

this experiment is utterly amazing in the sense that it reflects that the matter might also possess a mind of its own and that we can influence the particle behavior with our mind!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-slit_experiment

So, matter works as the mind directs, consciously, or unconsciously. The great law of attraction also points towards the same thing. Here are some interesting reads regarding the relation of Ayurveda with the law of attraction.

Healing through Magical Water

I learned the method of making healing water through Heartfulness meditation. The book “the heartfulness way” And the procedure is really simple.

  • Fill a bowl with water.
  • Close your eyes and meditate on it for 30 minutes with the feeling that this water should heal anyone who consumes it.
  • Give it to the person concerned.

This remedy helps in the case of physical and mental disorders equally. And it is completely worth trying. The priceless things in the world are free – whether it is air or water, even food. Nature doesn’t charge for anything. Similarly, if you have faith, medical treatment is also free!

Hope that this information reaches everyone in need!

What is the best Ayurveda treatment for weight loss or maintenance?

You might not believe it but it is true. Over the past few years, I have tried some hundreds of herbs and therapies trying to reduce weight for people as well as for me, but nothing works like “nirjala” or dry fasting (without water). And I am saying this on medical grounds and personal experience.

Today, it is very hard for all of us to believe that we can get something without paying a lot of money or doing some pain-staking exercise. But doing nothing can actually get you better results.

The most important factor is control stress, because stress eating is one of the biggest cause behind any kind of weight gain. We try to find stress relief through false gratification derived through the sense of taste!

I personally started “nirjala” fasting last year and now I practiced it every month. And nothing goes wrong with a normal day, without much physical over-exertion or exposure to harsh sunlight. Nirjala fasting is an ideal method to reduce weight if you are in a sitting job. And trust me, once you get used to it, you will never feel dizzy, weak, or fainting!!!

I started with once a day meal fast, next I tried fasting only on fruits. Then I tried full day zero food fast with warm water. After that, I tried 1/2 day nirjala, as the concept of nirjala fasting made me very nervous. I was scared that I might faint or get excessive dehydration.

Here are a few benefits I found with nirjala (dry) fasting –

  • 10 kg weight loss in 2 months’ time without regaining the weight.
  • Reduced anger and frustration
  • Peaceful mind and clarity of thought
  • Effective Stress control
  • Better digestive and absorption capacity
  • Almost nil rate of diseases (seasonal cough, cold, indigestion, etc. ), better immunity
  • My chronic cold, stuffy nose and other congestive symptoms vanished. In fact, I don’t remember getting cold in the past 12 months. Earlier, I would start sneezing the moment I get up from the bed in the morning. Complete Relief from Mucus Accumulation in Sinuses through Dry Fasting – 48 Hours Ekadashi Observations
  • My skin disorder, itching, and inflammation started getting better on its own.
  • All my parameters are absolutely normal – BP, sugar, Hb, etc. (in fact, I was detected to be pro-diabetic 2 years back, now it is completely normal!)

The only condition is that you should eat properly when you are eating. So actually I do dry fasting for many days in a month. But I also eat very nutritious food for the rest of the month, so everything is balanced.

Nirajala fasting actually makes our bodies better as nutrition is more about your capacity to absorb food and not about eating more!

And with effective stress relief and regular dry fasting, it is IMPOSSIBLE to regain any weight! Trust me, I have a personal experience with this. Also let me know your experiences with dry fasting.

The Original Health Query

I am eating a lot! Food that are not health at all: chocolates, candies, fast food, hamburger, and I am feeling this urge to eat all the time. I can’t tell you that this is making me feel bad, I am feeling so happy and realized when eating these things, specially chocolate. However, I do know that this will do me harm in the long term… That’s why I want to stop this habit and gradually move to a more healthy diet. But how do I start without feeling that I am depriving myself from the happiness derived from these foods? How to be effective but at the same time gentle with myself during this transition?

The Treatment Approach

basically, I feel that you are suffering from a mild compulsive eating disorder where you feel that you have to eat all these things. They make you happy especially chocolates and candies. In Ayurveda it is called Pragya Aparadha.

Pragya Aparadha

This word Pragya Aparadha is made up of two words – Pragya and Aparadha. Pragya means wisdom and aparadha means crime and what you are doing is a crime against wisdom.

You already know that it is not healthy for you. Every time you eat it you feel that this is not healthy for me but since the food makes you happy, the food makes you content you eat it but at the back of your mind you’re feeling that you should try to stop

Pragya Aparadha is said to be the the biggest cause for disease according to Ayurveda because your mind knows that what you’re doing is not right and yet when you keep on eating these candies and chocolates, you gradually build up a sense of guilt in your mind that you are doing something wrong.

And this guilt lowers the immunity overall immunity of the body and seeks punishment in the form of the disease where you’ll fall sick and then you learn. It will create a big impression on your mind that I ate all those things and I’m sick. Now I’m not going to eat these things. It propels a kind of learning in this way. But we don’t need to learn this way since there are other ways to learn the right way of living. Any treatment in Ayurveda starts with the first and the most fundamental step that is the removal of course.

The Cause

Let’s see what is the cause in this case. To most of us, the cause will be junk food chocolates, candies and all that but if you dig deeper, you will find that the the cause is not eating chocolates or junk food. This eating of all the unhealthy food is the result of the cause the cause might be much deeper inside the cause might be lack of happiness because when you lack happiness you lack a natural sense of satisfaction through your overall lifestyle and the things that you are doing.

Then, this lack of happiness leads you to find happiness elsewhere, all the food that we eat creates a kind of satisfaction in our brain and especially chocolates, because they are sweet. They create a sense of satisfaction. Even Ayurveda says that sweet food creates sense of satisfaction, sense of security and that’s why most of the people, when they’re stressed, like eating sweet things because sweet things help them to calm down, help them feel more safe and it is a natural instinct of the body.

When we are stressed, we are in that the emergency mode, we are in sympathetic mode and sympathetic mode needs a lot of energy because it triggers flight fright and freeze response in this response you have to be ready to fight or to run away, so you need a lot of sugar. So when you eat sugar, body feels prepared and feel secure. My assumption is that you lack general happiness which will make you feel happy and satisfied in your life and because you lack that you are eating all these things and this is a very common problem now.

Stress Hidden in Subconscious Mind

Why you are unhappy is a personal cause. Sometimes we don’t realize why we are not happy, for example, if you have a real personal need but that personal need. For example, you need to leave your job. For example, you need to change your house. These are big needs.

You somehow feel deep inside that, this is not what I want to do. But there is also a sense of insecurity a sense of deep fear that it will destabilize what you already have and this fear hides the need, it hides the need, it curtains the need so you don’t see the need but still, you are unhappy inside.

Stress Eating

So you need to fill this space with chocolates and candies and hamburgers and these things are kind of painkillers for your need. So even when that these things are not healthy, you keep on eating them because you need to feel that pleasure, you need to feel that satisfaction.

So this is what I feel that there is an internal lack of happiness which needs to be filled. When you feel happy and satisfied, gradually you will see that these needs of eating chocolates or candies will fade away. You will not even remember to eat chocolate or candy.

Two Pronged Treatment

There can be a two-pronged treatment for your disorder. I will say that essentially it’s a mental disorder and not a physical disorder so the treatment has to come from the mind, the permanent treatment has to come from the mind. So here we can have two-pronged treatment, in which one is the immediate treatment and other is the long-term permanent treatment.

The first prong treatment is yukti vyapashraya, treatment by herbs and medicines. This treatment cannot bring you happiness, because that is a personal problem. You will have to figure it out. But –

YUKTIVYAPASHYA

The primary treatment in yukti vypashraya starts with a basic body detox, which you can do by general fasting, intermittent fasting. You can do it by fruit fasting, milk fasting. There are many kinds of fasting and you can choose your type.

The second prong and the most important one is going to be satyavajay or controlling the mind. In controlling the mind, we can use several methods like counseling, meditation, mindfulness, art therapy. We can explore all these options together and find out what works best for you. So these two treatments will go together.

The first treatment will prevent your body from further damage, strengthen it, give it time and space to deal with the more permanent and long-lasting treatment, that is the mental treatment. And if we practice it successfully, if we are able to find out the real cause and remove it probably it should not take more than six months for you to get completely cured.

As for tonsillitis (you also have tonsilitis), this is going to be the primary foundation treatment because tonsilitis is nothing but a buildup of all the wrong thing, a wrong metabolic pattern that is developing in your body. So, first if we do not remove the unhealthy food and unhealthy lifestyle habits tonsillitis is going to be very difficult to get cured.

However at the same time we can we can proceed with certain treatment for tonsillitis so that you get it immediate relief but the permanent treatment is going to be satvavjay or mental treatment!

General Ayurveda Dietary Plan

According to the ethics of Ayurveda, a Vaidya(Ayurveda physician) should not charge for medical advice but only for medicines. I personally believe that no sick person should be forced to pay for medical advice. If you opt for free consultation, please go through the following steps –

REMOVE THE CAUSE

According to Ayurveda, without removing the root cause of the diseases, you can never reach a permanent cure. Most of the time wrong diet, lifestyle habits and stress is the cause.

Here are some steps that can help you to remove most of the root causes. I request you to implement the advice given in the free resource as a first step towards Ayurvedic treatment. More than 80% of your health problems will disappear once the recommended Ayurvedic daily and seasonal routine is already in place.

In some places, I have recommended fruits, ghee and organic food. However, even if you are not able to afford them, it is perfectly fine. Please practice mindful eating in whatever you eat, because energy that comes from vigyanamaya kosha (seat of wisdom) or anandamaya kosha (seat of bliss) is what keeps us alive and you can be healthy without any fancy food.

In fact, not eating can make you healthier. Fasting has most amazing benefits, including cancer prevention.

Correct The Diet

  1. Try to eat only when hungry, unless you are very weak, or thin. This is a crucial advice for patients of all lifestyle disorders like diabetes, hypertension etc. For detailed explanation –
    1. How much you need to eat
    2. Eat Healthy, Eat Less
  2. Fast at least once a week.

Why Home Remedies Don’t Work, and How to Safely Try Unknown Home Remedies!

Now-a-days there are so many Ayurvedic remedies available online, you see, for example – 5 tips for weight gain, 5 tips for weight loss or 7 tips for headache and so on and so forth.

However, these home remedies fail to produce identical results in all kinds of people. Some people may experience a huge relief; however there might be other who might feel no difference at all. And have you ever wondered- why is that so?

The people who follow Ayurvedic home remedies remind me of a friend who used to mug up all the answers in the text book exactly in the same sequence and she would reproduce these answers exactly in the same sequence in the question paper also. However, in the question paper the sequence will be changed and all her answers will always be wrong. And she would always be so confused “why is this happening?”

You see, home remedies work exactly in the same manner if you don’t know why you are doing them. If you don’t know what fits and what does not and this is what happens with the people who don’t know what their body needs.

You see, applicability is a huge factor here.  One home remedy which might work in a great way for some other person might not be applicable to you, because you might have a different body type or you stay in a different region or you have a different climate or currently there is a different season, or you have a different digestive capacity, there can be so many factors at work. Our body is such a complex dynamic metabolic system and it is so disrespectful of our uniqueness to expect exactly the same result from a same home remedy.

Some of the factors are –

  • PRAKRATI OR BODY TYPE
    • Vata Dominant
      • Hot and Oily Herbs
    • Pitta Dominant
      • Cool and Sweet Herbs
    • Kapha Dominant
      • Hot and Dry Herbs
  • REGIONS
    • Ayurveda describes 3 Major types of REGIONS
      • Anoop (Wet Lands)
      • Jangalya (Dry Lands)
      • Sadharan (Normal Land)
  • CLIMATE
    • Climatic cycle defines local seasons and weather conditions
    • That’s why, summer in a desert is different from that in a mountain.
    • Herbs grown in the local climate are the best for the natives.
  • SEASON
    • Classical Ayurvedic Remedies change according to Seasonal Variations.
Ritu Haritaki (Seasonal Combination of Chebulic myrobalan)

DIGESTION

Digestion determines the real benefits of herbal Remedies.

Haritaki (Chebulic myrobalan) is a wonder herb! However a person with INDIGESTION must never consume it.

Even your faith in the home remedy can bring about a drastic change in the results. No one today can deny the impact of placebo in the field of medicine. And if you have a huge faith in a home remedy, you might get incredible results from it even if it does not suit you and that’s why the Bhabhuti given by a sage works!

READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY

In my school, before every exam the examiner will announce” please read the question paper carefully” and it will also be written on the question paper because if we don’t read the question carefully, we will not answer the question, but will just vomit out what it there in our own mind.

When we know our health condition, when we know our body and what it needs , we have read the question properly and this is the right time to answer.

Now you cannot go exploring your body when you are reeling with pain. I quite understand that. And therefore, there is a method to try unknown home remedies, if you must.

UPSHAY

Upshay is an Ayurvedic dosage technique where the patient is given a very small dose, let’s says one fourth or one tenth of the actual required quantity and kept under observation for some time. If he feels relief, the medicine fits otherwise it does not.  Plain and simple, we cannot profess to understand everything about the body!

For a Vaidya (Ayurveda physician), this method is a great tool for differential diagnosis as well.  It helps to determine or verify the exact Dosha situation in the body. Besides, this method of using minimum dosage also protects you from sudden and harsh allergic reactions, as this method gives ample time to the body to adjust its response.

Therefore, as a lay man, if you must use a home remedy in an emergency, try to use it in very small dosage and observe the response for some time, it can be one hour or  a day, depending on your convenience and then decide to use it for a longer duration.

I hope that this information helps you to choose your best home remedy.

Complete Relief from Mucus Accumulation in Sinuses through Dry Fasting – 48 Hours Ekadashi Observations

Photo by Vegan Liftz on Pexels.com

Hi all,

Today is Ekadashi (11th day of the lunar phase according to Vedic calendar). By tomorrow 6 am, I will complete 48 hours without food or water. And I want to share my amazing health experiences with you all!

I remember the first time I did dry fasting was on Karva Chauth. And I was so scared of dying out of thirst that i went to sleep for most of the day and woke in the evening to drink water and eat. I am more or less fine with not eating , however no water was a scary concept for me. So, if you also feel the same right now, I would like to welcome you to the amazing world of dry fasting!

I started Ekadeshi fasting 2 years back after my teacher asked me to try it. Initially, I started with a fruit based diet and it worked well. After 2-3 months, I turned to a zero food fasting for 24 hours, sustaining only on water.

After a few more months, I started feeling better and more comfortable with the idea of dry fasting. With Apara Ekadashi of 2018, I started monthly twice dry fasting on Ekadashi. The fasting is normally for 24 hours. However, it extend to 36-48 hours for the people who believe in vedic astrological basis of Ekadashi fasting.

Here are some of my health observations regarding dry fasting –

Initially, when I started with the normal fasting, there was not much change in my health except better digestion. However, with dry fasting I saw a radical change!!!

As a child, I always had some or the other respiration issues, not very sever but I remember never going to sleep without Otrivin in my nose. And the feeling of breathlessness is quite terrible for a child! In fact, many of my family members have had severe respiratory problems.

A few years back (2015) I developed severe chronic cold. I would start sneezing the moment I woke up. My feet felt so cold that I would be wearing socks even in the summer mornings. And at the same time I also developed a severe breathing problem. I would feel breathless most of the time, esp at night.

I am severly allergic to all allpathic medicines. Therefore, Ayurveda is the only relief for me. However, even as an Ayurveda physician, I practiced Ayurveda the allopathic way, that is I always relied on Ayurvedic medicines. I completely forgot or never absorbed the fact that elimination of the root cause is the fundamental step of Ayurvedic treatment. All these diseases that I was blessed with, helped me to recall the basic concepts of Ayurveda.

When I started the dry fasting, I would feel a mild but constant flow of mucus from the head region towards the food pipe. And this would continue throughout the day. Sometimes, I would get some tiny lumps on mucus in my mouth as well. However, this would not happen on any other day. And with this experience, I felt lighter in my head after every Ekadashi. And with this observation, I can safely conclude that there was a huge built up of mucus in my sinuses. I never felt any pain and therefore it was easy to ignore other minor symptoms.

Here, I have an important observation to make. On 29th Oct, 2019 I fasted for Chadra Darsgan (new moon sighting, another traditional fasting day). I was supposed to eat at night after a full day dry fasting. However, there was a constant mucus flow from the head and I did not feel like eating.

However, I wanted to eat something. So, I convinced myself of so many health reasons, and that I might feel hungry at the middle of the night (you don’t feel like getting up then), and had a good meal of sweet potatoes.

The mucus flow instantly stopped and I started feeling itchy in my nose. By the next morning, I had a fully blown cold, with watery nose and heaviness in head. This was a very interesting incident and we can conclude a lot of things from it. However, the bottom-line is that never go against the digestive system. Your body knows what it needs and when! Another inetersting read is – Go Dinnerless !

And with dry fasting , all this mucus gradually dissolved and disappeared from my system. There was so much of mucus that it took a whole year to be completely eliminated. Now when I am fasting today, I feel no mucus discharge from the head region. However, I am sure that now the fasting benefits will be channelized to some other metabolic improvement!

Earlier, I would catch a cold if my feet or head was wet even for a few minutes. Cold shower appeared deadly. Today, it is been almost 2 years since I caught a cold, even a minor one.

Also, now I have a cold shower every morning before sunrise no matter what the season or place may be, and I face perfectly no problems at all. And all this happened without any medicine at all!!! only by neti neti, not eating or drinking anything.

Thus inspired, I started adding more traditional fasting festivals to my monthly list like Chaturthi, Ashtami, Chaturdashi, Poornima, Amavasya (4th, 8th, 14th, 15th day of lunar phase respectively). I do a normal fruit fasting on other days, eating a single fruit meal at night.

In Dec 2019, I discovered the amazing concept of Bigu, Chinese fasting technique and sun gazing techniques. Now I am fully convinced that material food is only a very small part of the total energy that our body can receive from the environment. Will be writing more about my excellent experiences about permanent, zero exercise weight-loss (approx 20 kg) with dry fasting.

May God bless you with great health and a peaceful mind!

Health Basics of Ayurveda

Today, most people above the age of 35 years are suffering from at least one lifestyle disease. Digestive disorders, sleep problems, and stress are more common than a few decades back.

These primary disorders are the base of severe lifestyle diseases like hypothyroidism, diabetes, hypertension, etc. And this is because of the unhealthy dietary and lifestyle habits that we are following.

The Root of Lifestyle Disorders

We have severe defects in our daily routine that interferes with our healthy metabolism. They lower our immunity and makes us more susceptible to diseases and rapid aging.

Most of the people today have no fixed routine or time for eating. They skip their meals when they are hungry. On the other hand, they eat voluptuously when they are not hungry but have time to eat.

Similarly, most of us skip sleep in the night, the natural time to sleep according to the bio-rhythm of the body. Instead, they sleep till late. They miss the healthiest time of the day – Brahma muhurat and an opportunity to reset their metabolism.

Flow with the Nature

However, if we review and re-tune our bodies to the natural biorhythm, we will ensure 100% prevention from all diseases and have a life full of vigor and vitality. Ayurvedic ritucharya (seasonal health regimen), dinacharya (daily health routine), and sadvritta (moral and social conduct) ensure a healthy body as well as mind.

Ayurveda defines the wrong food and lifestyle as the root cause of all diseases. The aim of Ayurveda underlines the importance of a healthy lifestyle. According to Acharya Charak the objective of Ayurveda is –

Preserve the health of the healthy |
Treat the ones who fall sick||

Compared to Ayurveda, modern preventive medicine depends mainly on health supplements. It is vague and lacks a precise and natural order of prevention. In fact, it has been only a few decades since modern medicine accepted the therapeutic importance of food or meditation.

Ayurveda is one of the oldest sciences to have an elaborate preventive system. Ayurveda defines the ideal food, cooking methods, and food habits. It defines daily lifestyle (Dinacharya), seasonal preventive lifestyle (Ritucharya), and overall prevention of all diseases by maintaining the homeostasis of the body in all kinds of external conditions (Sama Dosha).

Dinacharya

Dinacharya is the ideal daily routine, according to Ayurveda, that should be followed to maintain the health regularly. It constitutes the dos and don’ts for everything, right from brushing the teeth to ideal sleep habits. Dinacharya regimen of Ayurveda specifies even the wood(datun) that should be used for cleaning the teeth by the people of different body constitution or prakrati.

It underlines the importance of having an optimal amount of food at the right time and in the right way. It also mentions various other preventive measures like the use of Kajal (Kohl) for the daily prevention of eye diseases, the use of Ayurvedic nasal drops for the prevention of all the disorders in the head region. It stresses the benefits of the right exercise and sleeps patterns for everyone.

Our bodies are exposed to disease-causing factors every second. And therefore, we must actively prevent diseases 24X7. And Dinacharya makes this daunting task completely effortless! It provides a precise and comprehensive guide to complete health preservation. It is a complete code to prevent diseases daily.

Dinacharya also constitutes “Achar Rasayana,” a comprehensive guide to prevent all mental problems like stress, anxiety, etc. It is the ideal spiritual and social code of conduct that, if followed, can save us from various psychological and social problems.

Ritucharya

Ritucharya is one of the most interesting Ayurvedic preventive systems. It is one of its kind as it deals with a preventive regimen for each season.

Seasons affect the body due to continuous changes in the external temperature and the environment. These seasonal changes disturb the physiological balance of the body and can cause severe disorders in the long run. Most of the problems in the body first reflect as seasonal disorders.

Ritucharya describes in detail the Ayurvedic concept of seasonal changes and their effects on body metabolism. It is the comprehensive ayurvedic preventive system that helps the body to adjust seamlessly to the changing external environment and prevent any metabolic disturbances.

Ritucharya constitutes the food habits, ideal food for each season, lifestyle changes to be incorporated with the seasonal changes, and so on. The most admirable aspect of Ritucharya is it’s a proactive approach. It makes the body immune to seasonal changes, instead of treating seasonal disorders!!!

Therefore, the one who will follow Ritucharya will never fall sick through the changing seasons and maintain a very high level of immunity. Ritucharya is the fountain of youth. The one who drinks from it will stay in the spring of health and youth always!!!

Unrestricted Metabolism

Ayurveda stresses the preservation of natural and unrestricted metabolism. It strictly prohibits artificial control of natural urges.

Animals live in an environment free from social bondage. And probably that’s why they stay free from diseases too. Esp. Wild animals do not have any access to medicines. Still, they usually remain healthy and live out their average lifespan, just because they do not exert unnatural control over their bodies.

However, humans lose a lot in the name of civilization and society. We tend to control our natural urges like thirst, hunger, urination, defecation, etc. very frequently. Due to social influence, we tend to control our natural urges forcefully and hinder the natural metabolic rhythm.

Ayurveda suggests that the body should be allowed the freedom of natural conduct. Most of us today have become insensitive to many of our natural urges like thirst, hunger. We might overlook thirst, hunger, or defecation if we are working or watching TV! This outrageous conduct daily impedes the brisk rate of metabolism and lowers immunity.

All classical Ayurvedic texts have a separate chapter elaborating on disorders resulting from unattended natural urges and their treatment. So, it’s a significant health issue.

Next time you are in an important meeting, don’t be sorry to sneeze or cough!

Satvavjay

Satva means the mind, and the term satvavjay is the victory over the mind.

According to ancient Vedic wisdom, the body is nothing but a projection of the mind. If you are a “Matrix” fan, you would agree! And, therefore a sensitive, meditative, and balanced mind is the core of a healthy Ayurvedic lifestyle. It is a healthy mind that is unoccupied by external noise or clutter. A soul that listens to the body and let our social obligations, stress, fear, or anxiety take a back-seat, is the very foundation of perennial health.

Each set of human mind and body has its own dharma – swadharma. Hindus whisper “tvama vedosi” in the ears of a new-born child. It means – you are the infinite wisdom. You see, your soul, your body knows what’s best for you. And a meditative mind can help you to discover a distinct and utterly personalized approach to health. Therefore, connecting with the body through meditation is the ultimate cure to all worldly diseases.

Jivem Shardah Shatam

The key of Ayurveda is balance! and with this key, Ayurvedic lifestyle can enable us to have a long, healthy, and fruitful life. Vedic Sutra “Jivem shardah shatam” means – let us live a hundred years(autumns). Ayurvedic preventive lifestyle, armed with healthy daily routine( Dinacharya), healthy seasonal routine (Ritucharya), ideal mental and social conduct ( Achar Rasayana), and other health habits, is the most comprehensive preventive system in the world.

Besides, these rules are simple and easy to follow. They can be readily observed by the sick and the healthy, the rich, and the poor alike. Ayurveda makes no distinction for imparting health to all. Let’s follow these age-old and time-tested tenets of Ayurveda and live a prosperous and healthful life.

Importance of organic, local and seasonal food

Today we have surplus food production, all kinds of fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year, and everywhere. For example, dragon fruit a native to china is available in the US, and strawberries are available in the Middle East. But, are you sure that this is real progress?

Now people have more than enough to eat, but they are falling sick from eating this food. Today we have more diabetes, hypertension, hormonal imbalances, and cancers than ever before, and there is an urgent need to look at some of the possible reasons.

GM food – Changing the core, is it worth the cost?

Genetic engineering of seeds has helped us to have crops that are most resistant to pests, seasonal changes, diseases, etc. But there is almost no long term research on the food safety of this produce. Let me give you one typical example – now strawberry grows around the year, even in the frosty weather and never gets spoilt. This achievement is a result of genetic engineering. Strawberry genes are modified by adding a gene from a fish that survives in chilling water. So, now strawberries are as resistant as the fish against the cold.

Another example is corn. Corn is genetically modified to kill a pest. When this pest ingests the corn, the modified grains cause internal bleeding and hemorrhage in pest’s intestines. And let’s observe that there is a growing problem of leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome, where the intestines get inflamed and sometimes perforated!

Now people are more allergic to a wide variety of food, and it can be anything from peanuts to fresh coriander! One of the hypotheses is that genetically modified food is not natural. Our body recognizes all-natural genetic structures, like natural grains, meat, milk, etc.  But when a genetically modified food enters the body, it appears like unidentified foreign elements. Body tags it as a dangerous substance and triggers an autoimmune reaction as a protective response. And this logic completely fits in the health puzzle. Since we have so many genetically modified foods, anything can trigger an allergic reaction in the body. So, now can you guess why so many people have milk allergies today?

A few decades back, the natural genes of the cow were mixed with buffalo enhance the milk production. The milk these cow-like animals produce is not identifiable by the body, it is not natural, it does not fit anywhere, just like an anomaly! Sadly, there have been cases where people have been through near-death experiences due to severe milk allergies.

We are losing our food. Soon there will be lesser food and more food-like substances that are not edible at all! Can you call this progress? We are becoming weaker and more and more vulnerable as a race! This is serious.

Why seasonal food is the best?

It is high time for us to retrace our steps back to organic food. And interestingly organic food is naturally seasonal. You will never find a natural crop of mango in winter, it is a summer fruit, and lo! It helps to combat harsh heat waves in the tropical climate. Seasonal produce is the only food. Rest is genetically modified poison.

Similarly, all hydrating fruits like water melon, litchi, melon etc naturally grow in summer, when we rapidly lose water to summer heat. On the other hand, there is a huge variety of fruits and vegetables found in the winter season, when the digestive system is considered to be at its best.

According to Ayurveda, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas all cause vata aggravation in the body. However, they grow in winter and can be well digested by the strong  winter digestion. But if you were to eat the same vegetables in rainy season, they might lead to severe vata vitiation in the body. And therefore, these vegetables are unavailable in the

Why local food is the best?

Everything is available everywhere. This is the result of another human intrusion in the natural scheme of nature.  Cardamom naturally grows in a hot climate, for example in south India and according to Indian traditional science Ayurveda, it is cooling in nature. Cardamom is also an excellent remedy for all kinds of inflammatory disorders. The produce suits the weather! Cardamom is excellent for people living in a hot climate.

Let’s take another example, saffron naturally grows in a frigid climate, and it is hot in temperament. Now the frosty state of Kashmir in India is the largest producer of saffron. And look at the level of perfection in nature. Saffron is excellent for people in cold climate. However, hot food for hot weather is not a great combination. But since saffron is readily available now in middle east, may God save the natives there! Dates are a better option for them.

Content is the key

When God said, “Be content with what you have,” I think that it was also a piece of health advice. Let’s not run after Italian oregano, or California almonds, or Quinoa from Peru. Local food is the best. If we be content , we will be healthy!

Let’s choose our food, consciously. Let’s not have more but good food. Let’s stop poking our finger at the fine balance of nature. Let’s use human intelligence for the betterment and not for the destruction of our race and our planet.

Best wishes!
